President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid on Sunday and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Biden announced his decision on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I have made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

The Washington Post reported that Biden’s abrupt decision has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, plunging the Democratic Party into an unprecedented scramble to select a new nominee to face former President Donald Trump. Harris expressed her gratitude for Biden’s endorsement, saying she is “honored” and vowed to “earn and win” the nomination. If successful, Harris could become the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major political party’s ticket.

Despite Biden’s endorsement, CNN reported that it remains unclear whether Harris will secure the nomination or what process the party will use to select an alternative candidate. Sources close to Sen. Joe Manchin, an independent from West Virginia, indicated that he is considering re-registering as a Democrat and entering the presidential race.
