President Droupadi Murmu affirmed on Tuesday that India is the “blessed land of Dharma,” highlighting the country’s enduring legacy of spiritual leaders who have illuminated paths to inner peace and external harmony. Speaking at the first Asian Buddhist Summit, hosted by the Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), Murmu praised the Buddha’s enlightenment as a pivotal historical moment. “The Buddha holds a unique place among these pathfinders,” she said.
“Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya is an event unparalleled in history,” she remarked, noting that he shared his profound insights for the benefit of all, embodying the principle of “Bahujana sukhaya bahujana hitaya cha” — for the welfare of the masses.
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat echoed this sentiment, stating that Buddha Dhamma represents a holistic way of life. “It preaches peace, happiness, and harmony, encouraging compassion, love, kindness, and equanimity among all,” he said, urging both Buddhists and non-Buddhists to draw inspiration from the Buddha’s teachings.
Shekhawat also underscored India’s commitment as the birthplace of Buddha Dhamma, emphasizing the importance of the “Dhamma Setu,” a cultural bridge among Asian nations. He called for the preservation of Buddhist heritage sites, the promotion of Buddhist studies, and the facilitation of pilgrimage circuits. “The presence of scholars and leaders from across Asia symbolizes a living tradition of Buddha Dhamma that continues to guide humanity towards peace and compassion,” he added.
