Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, following a warrant signed by the President of India. The Department of Justice issued a formal notification of his appointment, and he is set to assume the role on November 11, 2024.
Elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, Justice Khanna has delivered numerous landmark rulings and served on multiple Constitution Benches. His judgments have consistently emphasized personal liberty, democratic participation, and individual autonomy. Known for his meticulous judicial approach, he is recognized for his pragmatic view on dispute resolution and effective use of judicial time.
In addition to his Supreme Court duties, Justice Khanna is the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Council of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal. Under his leadership, the National Legal Services Authority has focused on grassroots access to justice and community engagement.
Justice Khanna began his judicial career in 2005 as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court, later becoming a Permanent Judge. He played a key role in several institutions, including the Delhi Judicial Academy and the Delhi International Arbitration Centre.
With a legal career spanning over four decades, Justice Khanna’s expertise covers constitutional law, taxation, arbitration, and commercial litigation. His early practice began in Delhi’s Tis Hazari District Courts, and he later expanded his practice to the Delhi High Court and various tribunals. He also served as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Justice Khanna will retire on May 13, 2025, after serving as the 51st Chief Justice of India.
