Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Monday said that the government is considering legislative measures to address the surge in hoax bomb threats targeting domestic and international flights. Speaking at a press conference, the minister said two main areas of action are under consideration, including amendments to the Aircraft Security Rules. Hoax bomb threats have disrupted nearly 100 flights across the country in the past week, causing significant concern within the aviation sector. The majority of these threats, issued primarily via the social media platform X, have unsettled passengers and prompted aviation authorities to take swift action. On Saturday alone, at least 30 threats were reported, followed by another dozen on Sunday. All were eventually confirmed to be hoaxes, according to reports.
“One of the ideas we want to push forward is to amend the Aircraft Security Rules. Once the perpetrator behind such threats is apprehended, we intend to place them on the no-fly list,” Kinjarapu said. The minister further elaborated that another proposed measure involves strengthening the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Civil Aviation Act, aiming to ensure harsher penalties for individuals responsible for these threats.
The legislative actions come in response to the growing concern over passenger safety and the operational disruptions caused by false bomb alerts, which have become a recurring issue in recent months.
