Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of Lord Buddha’s teachings in promoting global peace on Thursday. While addressing the ceremony in celebration of International Abhidhamma Divas and recognition of Pali as a classical language at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, the Prime Minister asserted that India has not contributed to war but has instead offered the world the wisdom of Buddha. Modi urged nations to learn from Buddha’s principles, reject conflict, and embrace peace. Quoting Buddha, he said that true happiness lies in peace and that compassion is essential for overcoming hatred. The Prime Minister highlighted the relevance of Buddha’s teachings in addressing today’s global instability and expressed optimism about India’s future, referring to the next 25 years as “Amrit Kaal” — a period for the nation’s development.
PM Modi said that India, the birthplace of Buddha, is committed to sustainable living and has initiated global efforts to combat climate change through initiatives like Mission LiFE. He recounted India’s contributions to the world, including the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance, reflecting Buddha’s principles.
He underscored that India’s swift humanitarian responses during crises, such as the earthquake in Turkey and the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrate the country’s commitment to compassion. Modi concluded by affirming that India’s youth will lead the world in science and technology, guided by the values of Buddhism. Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Kiren Rijiju were also present at the event.
