Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed film “Shahid,” featuring Rajkummar Rao in a leading role, faced a tumultuous journey to success, despite garnering praise at international film festivals. The movie, which was shot over a span of a year with a 32-day schedule and a modest budget of ₹65 lakh, initially struggled to find buyers in India.
Jai Mehta, executive producer and first assistant director on the film, shared insights into the challenges they faced. Despite critical acclaim at prestigious festivals such as the Toronto Film Festival and Busan, “Shahid” failed to secure local buyers until its screening at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), where producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala took notice and propelled its acceptance among Indian audiences.
Reflecting on his father’s filmmaking ethos, Jai Mehta emphasized the demanding yet rewarding nature of their projects. He noted that Hansal Mehta’s films, known for tackling tough subjects, have always encountered obstacles, including intense scrutiny and criticism. However, these challenges have fortified their resolve to create meaningful cinema that resonates deeply with viewers.
Transitioning from assistant roles in notable films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “CityLights,” Jai recently ventured into independent direction with the series “Lootere,” where Hansal served as a guiding force. Despite his father’s vast experience as a director, Jai appreciated the unspoken rapport they share on set, where mutual understanding and respect for each other’s creative instincts flourished.
In discussing their collaboration on “Lootere,” Jai highlighted Hansal Mehta’s supportive presence during production, despite being physically present for only a brief period. He described the experience as both intimidating and enriching, benefiting from his father’s seasoned perspective while navigating the challenges of independent filmmaking.
The story of “Shahid” encapsulates the resilience and determination necessary in the film industry, showcasing how perseverance and artistic integrity can ultimately lead to recognition and acclaim. Hansal Mehta’s dedication to storytelling and Jai Mehta’s burgeoning directorial journey underscore a legacy of cinematic excellence rooted in passion and persistence.
