The movie, which was shot over a span of a year with a 32-day schedule and a modest budget of ₹65 lakh, initially struggled to find buyers in India.
Jai Mehta, executive producer and first assistant director on the film, shared insights into the challenges they faced. Despite critical acclaim at prestigious festivals such as the Toronto Film Festival and Busan, “Shahid” failed to secure local buyers until its screening at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), where producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala took notice and propelled its acceptance among Indian audiences.
Reflecting on his father’s filmmaking ethos, Jai Mehta emphasized the demanding yet rewarding nature of their projects. He noted that Hansal Mehta’s films, known for tackling tough subjects, have always encountered obstacles, including intense scrutiny and criticism.
