Jaynagar, located in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has been witnessing violent protests since this morning over the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old schoolgirl. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night when  the girl was returning home from her tuition classes. Her body was discovered on the banks of the Ganges River in Kripakhali village on Saturday morning, according to media reports. These protests are a continuation of the unrest surrounding the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case that took place during WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s regime. The girl’s parents allege that the police are not taking their report seriously and are delaying action. According to media sources, the police responded with lathi charges and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. However, the police assert that they acted promptly after an FIR was registered at 9 PM on Friday.
