India has overtaken Japan to become the third-largest power in the Asia Power Index, underscoring its growing geopolitical influence. This achievement highlights India’s dynamic growth, burgeoning population, and expanding economy, solidifying its position as a key force in the region. The 2024 Asia Power Index reveals India’s steady ascent in regional power rankings, with its potential to further exercise influence in the coming years.

Key Drivers Behind India’s Rise

  1. Economic Growth: India’s robust post-pandemic recovery contributed to a 4.2-point rise in its Economic Capability. With its large population and GDP growth, India is now the third-largest economy in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms.
  2. Future Potential: India’s Future Resources score rose by 8.2 points, signalling its demographic dividend. Unlike regional rivals China and Japan, India’s youthful population will drive its economy and labor force growth in the coming decades.
  3. Diplomatic Influence: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has elevated India’s international profile. India’s non-aligned stance has allowed it to navigate complex global challenges effectively, ranking 6th in diplomatic dialogues in 2023 due to its active multilateral engagement.
