Later, under government pressure, Netflix India announced on Tuesday that it has added both the real and code names of the hijackers involved in the Indian Airlines aircraft hijacking, as depicted in the web series ‘IC814: The Kandahar Hijack’. Previously during the day, Netflix India content chief Monika Shergill appeared before officials of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry following a summons by the government over the portrayal of hijackers in the streaming series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack.’ During the meeting, Netflix assured the government that all future content would be sensitive to and in accordance with the nation’s sentiments. Monika Shergill conveyed this assurance, aiming to address concerns raised by both the Ministry and the public.
The Ministry took serious note of the series, which has stirred controversy due to its depiction of the hijackers of the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi. A segment of viewers has raised objections to what they see as a ‘humane’ portrayal of the hijackers.
BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya voiced strong criticism on X (formerly Twitter), condemning the series’ depiction of the IC-814 hijackers. Malviya asserted that these hijackers were dangerous terrorists who used aliases to hide their Muslim identities. He accused filmmaker Anubhav Sinha of legitimizing the criminals by promoting their non-Muslim names, warning that such portrayals could mislead future generations into believing that Hindus were responsible for the IC-814 hijacking. Malviya further accused the Left of attempting to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, who were all Muslims, by exploiting the power of cinema, and expressed concern that this could undermine India’s security and misdirect blame from the actual perpetrators.
