In a surprising move, a California-based startup founded by CEO Ben Nowack aims to revolutionize solar energy by redirecting sunlight onto Earth’s solar panels at night, effectively “selling sunlight” on demand. Nowack unveiled this groundbreaking initiative in April at the International Conference on Energy from Space in London. “Sharing a bit more about Reflect Orbital today. @4TristanS and I are developing a constellation of revolutionary satellites to sell sunlight to thousands of solar farms after dark. We think sunlight is the new oil, and space is ready to support energy infrastructure. This airborne test was the last piece needed before we launch above the atmosphere,” Nowack shared in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
He added, “By precisely reflecting sunlight that is endlessly available in space to specific targets on the ground, we can create a world where sunlight powers solar farms for longer than just daytime, and in doing this, commoditize sunlight.”
