Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Saturday, concluding a landmark two-nation tour to Poland and Ukraine. During his stay in Kyiv, Modi told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in direct talks with Russia, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the ongoing conflict.
During the meeting with Zelenskyy, Modi on Friday highlighted that India has consistently advocated for peace since the war began and reiterated the nation’s commitment to supporting any efforts aimed at restoring tranquility in the region. During their discussions in Kyiv, which occurred against the backdrop of continued hostilities, Modi expressed India’s readiness to take an “active role” in peace initiatives and even offered his personal involvement in efforts to end the war.
During their discussions, both leaders expressed a shared interest in elevating bilateral relations from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties for the benefit of both nations, emphasizing mutual trust, respect, and openness. The leaders reviewed the positive trajectory of their relationship, which has grown significantly over the past three decades. They acknowledged the importance of ongoing engagements, including their meetings in Apulia and Hiroshima during the G7 Summits, and other high-level exchanges between their officials.
Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy reiterated their commitment to upholding international law, including the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. The leaders discussed India’s participation in the Peace Summit in Switzerland and agreed on the importance of further bilateral dialogue to ensure lasting peace.
The discussions also focused on enhancing economic, scientific, and technical cooperation. The leaders explored new areas of collaboration, including trade, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, defense, and green energy. They emphasized the role of the Indian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission in fostering stronger economic ties.
Cultural and people-to-people ties were also highlighted, with both sides agreeing to expand exchanges and educational collaborations. The contribution of the Indian diaspora in Ukraine was acknowledged, and gratitude was expressed for Ukraine’s support during the evacuation of Indian students in 2022.
In defense cooperation, the leaders agreed to strengthen ties between their defense entities through joint collaborations and partnerships. They also condemned terrorism and called for greater cooperation in combating extremism.
Prime Minister made a historic visit to Ukraine, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1992. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and invited President Zelenskyy to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
