An NRI who recently returned from the United States was shot at his residence in the Daburji area of Amritsar on Saturday. The victim, Sukhchain Singh, was attacked by two armed men who entered his home and opened fire at close range, despite pleas from his wife and child for mercy. Singh, who sustained two bullet injuries, has been hospitalized and is currently in stable condition with injuries to his face and hands, according to India Today.

The attack was captured on Singh’s CCTV camera, which recorded the assailants fleeing the scene after their pistols jammed. Singh, who had recently returned to Amritsar about 20 days ago after living in the US, had purchased a luxury car worth Rs 1.5 crore. The attackers reportedly entered his home under the pretense of inquiring about his car’s registration certificate before opening fire.

The news outlet said that Singh’s family has demanded strict action against the perpetrators, with his mother alleging that the attack was orchestrated by the family of Singh’s first wife. The government has instructed the Amritsar Police Commissioner to take swift action in the case. An FIR has been lodged against five members of Singh’s ex-wife’s family, according to media reports.

Police have seized all CCTV footage from the residence and launched an investigation. The incident has intensified criticism of the ruling AAP government over the law and order situation in Punjab. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harpal Singh informed told The Tribune that various theories are being explored, and further investigation is underway. A relative of the victim revealed that Sukhchain had received a threat about five months ago following a dispute with the family of his first wife, who allegedly committed suicide.
