New Delhi, August 10
Hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus took to the streets of Dhaka to protest a series of targeted attacks and the vandalism of temples that have occurred in the aftermath of the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government this week, according to media reports. The collapse followed intense student-led demonstrations. Videos circulated by a Bangladesh news outlets and political activists on social media showed the protesters holding posters that called for the protection of minorities, while chants of “Who are we? Bengali, Bengali” echoed through the streets.
The demonstrators, appealing for peace, blocked a major intersection in the capital on Friday, chanting ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.’ The Awami League, Hasina’s party, shared videos of the protest on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Bangladesh Hindus have taken to the streets in Shahbagh, Dhaka, to protest the attacks on their person, properties, and places of worship since August 5,” the news outlet India Today reported.
In the wake of Hasina’s departure to India following weeks of protests over a controversial quota system in government jobs, widespread looting of Hindu homes and the targeting of temples have been reported. Hindus comprise about 8 percent of Bangladesh’s population.
