Chandigarh, August 10

BJP leader Sanjay Tandon has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to challenge Congress leader Manish Tewari’s narrow victory in the recent Chandigarh parliamentary elections. Tewari secured the seat by a margin of just 2,504 votes, with 2.16 lakh votes compared to Tandon’s 2.14 lakh. According to the media reports, Tandon accuses Tewari of engaging in “corrupt practices,” including distributing guarantee cards and making false promises of financial benefits, such as ₹1 lakh salaries for first jobs and loan waivers, to sway voters in his Favour.

Tandon argues that these promises influenced a significant portion of the electorate, particularly poorer voters, and violated the Representation of the People Act, The Hindustan Times reported.  Tewari’s election should be declared void, and he should be recognized as the rightful winner. Despite multiple complaints filed with the returning officer, Tandon claims that no significant action was taken beyond a warning issued to the Congress party, the news outlet report said.
