Gulab Chand Kataria takes oath as Punjab Governor

Gulab Chand Kataria, a 79-year-old veteran of the BJP, was sworn in as the new Governor of Punjab on Wednesday, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit. His appointment was part of a larger reshuffle in which President Droupadi Murmu appointed six new Governors and transferred three others on Saturday night.

According to official information, with over four decades in politics, Kataria was first elected as an MLA from Udaipur in 1977 on a Janata Party ticket. He was re-elected in 1980 as a BJP candidate and has since been an eight-time MLA for Udaipur. He also represented Udaipur in the Lok Sabha in 1989. Previously, Kataria served as the 31st Governor of Assam, the Home Minister of Rajasthan, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly.

Kataria was born to Hukmi Chand Kataria and Lahari Bai on October 13, 1944. He earned a Master’s degree in Geography and studied Law at Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur. He is married to Anita Kataria. Kataria is known for his strong ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and holds significant influence in the Mewar-Wagad region of southern Rajasthan.
