The Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) has flagged over 53 drugs as “not of standard quality” in its alert for August 2024, raising significant safety concerns. Among the commonly used medications included in this list are paracetamol, Pan D, calcium supplements, blood pressure medicines, and anti-diabetic drugs, the news outlet The Hindustan Times reported.

Two widely-used antibiotics, Clavam 625 and Pan D, were labeled as spurious by a drug-testing laboratory in Kolkata. Additionally, Cepodem XP 50 Dry Suspension, a common infection treatment for children, also failed the quality test as per the CDSCO. The manufacturer of Pulmosil, another medication flagged in the tests, denied producing the problematic batch, stating it is a counterfeit product, pending investigation, the news outlet further said.

The CDSCO’s list provided details on the specific batches and manufacturers involved, with companies such as Hetero Drugs, Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Maxtar Bio-Genics, Health Biotech Ltd., and Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL) failing the quality standards.

However, the CDSCO noted that state drug authorities from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Telangana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and several Union Territories have yet to submit data regarding the Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) Alert, according to The Times of India.
